Blaenau Ffestiniog
Give Blaenau one full day: ride the Ffestiniog Railway or do Zip World, then leave. Two nights only if you want both, plus a walk.
Blaenau Ffestiniog is a former slate town of about 4,000 people inside Eryri (Snowdonia), 850 ft up and ringed by the national park. Almost everything visitors come for sits on one street or a mile north of it: the narrow-gauge Ffestiniog Railway, the Llechwedd caverns and Zip World. Trains and buses are thin, so a car makes the town far easier, and there is no fuel station in town.

Get around
The town is small enough to walk end to end in about 15 minutes. Llechwedd and Zip World are about a mile north on the A470 — walk it or drive. Roads in and out are narrow and fast, so cycling on them is a poor idea; for mountain biking, base elsewhere. Buses X1/84 (Llandudno, Betws-y-Coed), 1B (Porthmadog) and services to Dolgellau run, but not often.
