Blackville
Skip as a base unless you are fishing: one night at most, and only with a car booked before you arrive.
Blackville is a village of about 1,000 people on the Southwest Miramichi River, 40 km southwest of Miramichi, and it calls itself the salmon capital of the Miramichi. There is almost no public transport, no hotel strip and little to see beyond the river, so it works as a fishing or tubing stop with your own car, not as a sightseeing base.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- No car, no trip: Via Rail and Maritime Bus stop in Miramichi, 40 km away, and you still need a vehicle from there.
- Non-residents of New Brunswick must hire a licensed guide to fish for Atlantic salmon; seasons, catch limits and fly-only rules are strict.
- Much of the fishing water is privately held: arrange access through a sporting camp or outfitter before you travel.
- Winter roads ice up and many seasonal businesses close; check opening dates before booking.
A quiet village with low street crime; the real risks are the river, the weather and the driving. Cold water and fast current kill every year, so wear a life jacket, and tell someone your route before you go out on the water or the trails.
