Bispingen
Base here 1–2 nights only if you have a car or bike: the heath villages and Wilseder Berg are 8–15 km out, not walkable from town.
Bispingen is a small heath town of about 6,400 people right off the A7 between Hamburg and Hanover, and the practical gateway to the Lüneburg Heath Nature Park. The town itself is a strip of guesthouses, an indoor ski slope and a go-kart hall; the reason to come is the surrounding heath, the car-free village of Wilsede and the 169 m Wilseder Berg. Without a car or a rented bike you are limited to the town and the bus to Soltau.

Very low crime; the real risks are deer and cyclists on the narrow heath lanes, wet boardwalks, and getting caught out on open heath in a fast-moving summer storm.
