Birkenhead is a working town across the Mersey from Liverpool, not a destination in itself. Its case rests on three things: Birkenhead Park, the model for New York's Central Park; Hamilton Square, the largest cluster of Grade I listed buildings outside Trafalgar Square; and the Woodside ferry crossing, which gives you the best cheap view of the Liverpool waterfront. Two to four hours covers it. Sleep in Liverpool and cross for the afternoon.

Get around
Merseyrail's Wirral line links Liverpool James Street to Hamilton Square in about 3 min, with Conway Park, Birkenhead Central and Birkenhead Park a few minutes further. The Mersey Ferry runs Woodside–Pier Head. Buses cover the rest of the Wirral; a Saveaway day ticket covers train, bus and ferry in the area (about £5 off-peak).
