Birdsville
Go for 2 nights, or 3–4 if you are crossing the Simpson Desert: the town itself is a half-day, the desert and the races are the reason to come.
Birdsville is a 140-person town on the edge of the Simpson Desert, at the end of the Birdsville Track and the start of the QAA Line into Munga-Thirri National Park. The town is walkable in 20 minutes; the airport terminal is across the road from the pub. Most travellers come for the desert crossing, the September races or the Big Red Bash, not for the town alone.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Summer maximums average near 40°C with days of extreme heat; carry water and plan driving for the morning.
- Heavy rain can close roads and isolate the town for days, most likely in summer. Check road conditions before any outback drive.
- Munga-Thirri National Park is closed 1 Dec–15 Mar because of the heat.
- Mobile networks (Telstra, Optus) work in town but can be at capacity during race week.
- The drive from Brisbane takes longer than driving to Melbourne or Cairns; do not treat it as a short hop.
Remote but accessible with preparation: the real risks are heat, isolation and closed roads, not crime. Carry water, check road conditions, and tell someone your route before any desert drive.
