Bielefeld

Give Bielefeld one night, or a half-day stop between Hanover and the Ruhr: Sparrenberg Castle, the old town and the Teutoburg Forest edge.

Bielefeld is a 300,000-person city in North Rhine-Westphalia, on the ICE line between Hanover and the Ruhr, and the gateway to the Teutoburg Forest. Most of the old town was destroyed in World War II, so the sights are few and close together: a restored hilltop fortress, a 1904 city hall and a Jugendstil theatre. It works as one night or a half-day rail stop, not as a multi-day base.

The Stadtbahn (light rail/tram) plus buses cover the city, with headways down to about 10 minutes on main lines; tickets are integrated and run on proof of payment, so check the ticket-validation instructions before you board. Line 1 reaches Adenauerplatz for Sparrenberg Castle. The centre is walkable: station to Jahnplatz to the old town is 10–15 minutes on foot.
