Bhavnagar is a salt-and-jewellery port town on the Gulf of Khambhat, the old seat of a Rajput princely state and the place where Gandhi went to college. Most travellers use it as a bed for Palitana's Jain temples or Blackbuck National Park at Velavadar. The city itself is a half-day of lakes, a marble hill temple and Kathiyawadi food.

City buses are limited and slow; auto-rickshaws and hired cars do the work. Agree the fare before you get in, or use a metered app if one is running. For Palitana or Velavadar, hire a car with driver for the day — there is no useful public transport to either.
