Bethany, Connecticut
Bethany
Skip Bethany as a base: no hotels, no walkable centre. Go only as a 2–4 hour drive from New Haven (20 min each way) for the book barn and farm roads.
Bethany is a rural town of about 5,600 people between New Haven and Waterbury, one of the three Amity towns. There is no hotel, no bar and no town centre: two roads, Route 63 and Route 69, a used-book barn, farm stands and a swimming pond. It works as a two-to-four-hour detour on a New Haven trip, not as a place to sleep.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- No hotel or B&B in town: book in New Haven, Hamden or Waterbury and drive in.
- No bars in town; the package store on Amity Road is the only alcohol stop.
- Route 63 is a two-lane road with farm entrances and cyclists: expect slow traffic in fall.
- Some farm stands and the book barn keep seasonal or reduced hours: check before driving out.
- Cell coverage is fine on the main roads but patchy on the side lanes.
Very low crime; the real risks are rural-road driving (deer at dusk, ice in winter, no lighting on side lanes) and the lack of any shop or fuel after dark.
