Bernalillo
Give Bernalillo half a day plus one night if you want Coronado and the casino; otherwise sleep in Albuquerque, 25 min south on I-25.
Bernalillo is a Rio Grande town of about 8,300 people just north of Albuquerque, on the old Route 66 alignment and I-25. Its one real sight is Coronado Historic Site, the Kuaua Pueblo ruins across the river; the rest of the draw is the Santa Ana Star Casino, a golf course and the Rail Runner train that links Albuquerque and Santa Fe. Most travellers pass through, and that is fine.

Get around
A car is the practical answer: US-550 is the main drag and Coronado Historic Site sits on the far side of the Rio Grande with no useful bus. The New Mexico Rail Runner Express stops twice in Bernalillo — a park-and-ride by the I-25 exit and a downtown station on Camino del Pueblo — and runs limited daily service to Albuquerque and Santa Fe. A shuttle links the Rail Runner station to the Santa Ana Star Casino; nothing else local is worth planning around.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Distances look short on the map but the river crossing and US-550 traffic add time; drive, don't walk, to Coronado.
- Rail Runner service is limited and not aimed at late nights: check the last train before you commit to a car-free evening.
- October Balloon Fiesta traffic and hotel demand spill north from Albuquerque; book beds well ahead.
- Summer afternoons hit the high 30s °C with sudden monsoon storms; carry water and start sights at opening.
A small, quiet town; the real risks are heat, monsoon storms and unlit shoulders on US-550 after dark. Standard US precautions apply, and 911 works everywhere.
