Tempelhof and Neukölln, Berlin: neighborhood guide

Tempelhof and Neukölln sit south of the centre, joined by the Ringbahn and the U6 and U7/U8 lines. Tempelhof is the quieter half: an industrial belt, family streets in the south, and the former airport at its northern edge. Neukölln is denser and louder, with the northern quarter around Hermannplatz and Weserstraße now sharing Kreuzberg's cafés, bars and rising rents.

The two districts are not one place. North Neukölln is a grid of old tenements with a large Turkish, Arab and more recent international population, plus a young creative crowd. South of the Ringbahn, Britz, Buckow and Rudow turn village-like, with allotments, single-family houses and the Britzer Garten. Tempelhof keeps a similar split: offices and workshops near the ring, gardens and housing further out.

Neukölln has a reputation in the German press as a problem district. Unemployment and some crime types are above the Berlin average, but the streets most visitors use are busy and ordinary, and violent crime against tourists is rare. Within the area, pick by mood. Weserstraße and Reuterkiez for bars and food; around Tempelhofer Feld for quiet, green and family space; near Südkreuz for trains and long-distance buses; Rudow for cheap rooms and the U7.

The U6 runs through Tempelhof from Platz der Luftbrücke south, and the U7 and U8 cover Neukölln. The Ringbahn (S41/S42) links both to Kreuzberg, Prenzlauer Berg and City West without going through the centre. Südkreuz is the big rail station for ICE, IC and some long-distance buses; Neukölln station is on the S45 and the ring.

From BER airport, the S45 runs to Neukölln station, and bus X7 links the airport with Rudow on the U7. Allow roughly 45–60 minutes door to door depending on where you stay.

Berlin uses the VBB fare zones; the city sits in zones AB, and a single ticket is valid for a set time with changes. Buy and validate before boarding, and expect spot checks. Cycling is fast here: Tempelhofer Feld and the canal paths are easy, and many streets have bike lanes.

Tempelhofer Feld is the reason many people stay here: a former airfield turned public park, open from sunrise to sunset, free to enter, with cyclists, skaters, kite flyers and barbecue areas on the old runways. The terminal building next door is a 1930s–40s relic of the airlift era; guided tours run on a schedule and cost about €15 for adults, €10 for students and €7 for children 14 and under (2026 estimate, check).

In Neukölln, walk the Reuterkiez and Weserstraße for street art, small galleries and bars, and use Hermannplatz as a starting point. The Körnerpark in north Neukölln is a small formal garden with a gallery and café. Further south, the Britzer Garten is a large landscaped park with seasonal flower displays and a small entry fee (check).

The Police Historical Collection sits by Platz der Luftbrücke and shows uniforms, weapons and equipment from Berlin's police forces; it opens Monday to Wednesday, 09:00–15:00, so check before going. For a rainy day, the U-Bahn puts Museum Island and the centre within a short ride.
