Berlin airport to city centre: trains, buses, taxis and costs

Berlin sits in Holmes County, Ohio, in the middle of Amish Country. The nearest commercial airports are Akron-Canton, Cleveland Hopkins and Columbus. All three are reached by road only: no train or intercity bus runs to the village, so the choice is a rental car, a taxi or ride-hail, or a shared shuttle if your hotel arranges one.

A rental car is the practical answer for most visitors. The sights — Berlin, Walnut Creek, Sugarcreek, Millersburg, Dalton and Wooster — are 10–40 km apart with thin public transport between them. Pick up at the airport and drop off at the same desk to avoid a one-way fee.

Akron-Canton (CAK) is the closest and the easiest drive: Interstate 77 north to Ohio 21 and Ohio 39 west. It has fewer airlines and fewer nonstops than Cleveland, so compare fares before committing.

Cleveland Hopkins (CLE) has the widest choice of domestic flights and is usually the cheapest gateway from the East and West coasts. The drive is about 120 km, mostly on Interstate 77 south. Columbus (CMH) works if you are coming from the south or pairing the trip with Columbus; it is about 150 km.

Book ahead for a weekend in leaf season or around the Amish Country events calendar; airport desks at Akron-Canton are small and can sell out. Rates run about US$45–110 a day plus insurance, fuel and fees. Check what the base rate covers: liability cover in the US is often low, and many travellers add a damage waiver.

Winter driving is the main trap. Holmes County roads are two-lane and can ice over; Amish buggies share the shoulder, so pass only with clear sightlines. In spring and autumn, farm equipment on the road is normal. Fuel up near the airport or in Millersburg; stations thin out on the back roads.

Ride-hailing apps work at Akron-Canton and Cleveland Hopkins, with signposted pickup zones; expect US$70–120 from CAK and US$150–220 from CLE to Berlin (2026 estimate). Traditional taxis are metered and similar. Tip 15–20%, in the app or in cash.

Some Berlin and Walnut Creek hotels and inns run shuttles or can arrange a driver; ask when you book, since there is no taxi rank in the village. A shared shuttle is the cheapest car-free option but needs to be reserved in advance.

The table below is a 2026 estimate for one person or a small group, one way. A rental car usually wins on cost once you are staying more than a night, because you would otherwise pay for taxis between towns.

Tipping is expected on taxis and ride-hail (15–20%) and US$3–5 a night for hotel housekeeping. Tap water is drinkable. Plugs are type A and B at 120 V, so chargers from 230 V countries need a converter for hair dryers and straighteners.

Many shops and restaurants in Berlin close on Sundays, and some Amish-owned businesses close on Sundays and on Amish holidays. Check hours before you drive out. Federal holidays close banks and post offices; national parks stay open.
