Bergen op Zoom is a small historic city of about 66,000 people on the Brabantse Wal, the sandy ridge that separates North Brabant from Zeeland. Its walled centre is compact and walkable, with a late-Gothic palace, a 14th-century gate and a market square ringed by old buildings. Most travellers see it in half a day, or use it as a base for the wooded border park and the forts of the Dutch Water Line.
