Berdsk is Novosibirsk Oblast's second-largest city but has less than one-tenth the population of the capital. Founded as a fortress in 1716, the original town was flooded by the Ob Sea reservoir in the 1950s, so almost no historic buildings remain. Today it is a quiet, green suburb with a few parks and a beach on the Ob Sea. Most travellers have no reason to stop unless they are visiting friends or need a cheap bed near Novosibirsk.
