Give Berat 1–2 nights: walk the castle quarter and Mangalem at opening (08:00–10:00) before the day coaches, then leave.
Berat is a UNESCO-listed Ottoman town on the Osum river, 70 km south of Tirana, split into three parts: the hilltop Kala (castle) with its churches and the Onufri icon museum, the Muslim Mangalem quarter below it, and Gorica across the river. The old town is small and walkable but the climb to the Kala is steep. Most travellers use it as a one- or two-night stop between Tirana and Gjirokastër or the coast.

Get around
Walk. The old town is 15 min end to end, but the Kala climb is steep and cobbled — allow 15–20 min up. Local buses and taxis run from the bus station (north outskirts) to the centre; a taxi across town is short and cheap — agree the price first.

Berat is a low-crime town and safe to walk by day and evening. The real risks are the steep, unrailed cobbles up to the Kala, summer heat, and unmarked taxi fares — agree the price or insist on the meter.
