Berastagi

Give Berastagi one night, two if you climb Sibayak: a cool highland stop between Medan and Lake Toba, not a destination on its own.

Berastagi sits at about 1,300 m in the Barisan range, 67 km from Medan but often over two hours by road. It is a weekend escape for Medan families, with two volcanoes, hot springs, a fruit market and Karo Batak food. Most travellers use it as a break on the Medan–Lake Toba route.

Get around

The town is small enough to walk in under an hour. Yellow minibuses (Karya) run along the main road and to Kabanjahe, where you change for Medan or Lake Toba. Motorbikes can be rented in town; a car with driver is the practical option for the volcanoes and Lumbini park.

Scams and watch-outs

  • Sinabung has been erupting since 2013 and can be on high alert: the area around it, including Danau Kawar, may be closed — check with the local authority before going.
  • Sibayak's path is slippery, steep and confusing in places; a guide is worth it unless you are an experienced trekker.
  • Roads from Medan jam badly at weekends and holidays; allow more than two hours.
  • Fog and cold wind are common in the wet season — bring a light jacket.
  • Only Mandiri and BRI ATMs in town; carry cash for guesthouses and food stalls.

Berastagi is a small, low-crime highland town; the real risks are the volcano alert around Sinabung, slippery trails on Sibayak, and weekend road traffic. Petty theft is rare but keep valuables with you at markets.
