Bento Gonçalves is Brazil's wine capital, in the Serra Gaúcha hills of Rio Grande do Sul, settled by Italian immigrants in the late 19th century. The vineyards and wineries sit outside the centre, so you need a car, a tour or the tourist train to reach them. Two nights covers the valley and Caminhos de Pedra; one night is enough if you only want the train and a tasting.

Get around
The centre is small and walkable, but wineries, Caminhos de Pedra and the Pipa Pórtico gate are spread along highways with no useful bus. Use a car, a hired driver or a booked wine tour. Bento Transportes runs the municipal buses and links to Farroupilha and Caxias do Sul.
