Bennington is a small southwestern Vermont town on US 7, about an hour from Albany and three from Boston. Its draw is a cluster of 18th- and 19th-century buildings, the 306 ft Battle Monument obelisk and five covered bridges. Downtown is walkable; everything outside it needs a car. Most travellers pass through on a Vermont or Berkshires loop and stop for one night.

Get around
Downtown is walkable in 15–20 minutes end to end. For the monument, covered bridges, the pottery works and North Bennington you need a car; there is no useful local bus network for visitors. US 7 runs north–south and VT 9 east–west; both are mostly one lane each way with stoplights.
