Bendigo
Give Bendigo one full day and one night: gold-rush streets, the mine tour and the gallery all sit within a 15-minute walk of Pall Mall.
Bendigo is a Victorian gold-rush city of about 94,000 people, 140 km north-north-west of Melbourne and roughly 1 h 30 min by car on the Calder Freeway, or about 2 h by V/Line train from Southern Cross. The wealth of the 1850s left grand public buildings, a cathedral on the high point and a working mine you can go down. Most of what you came for is inside a compact centre, so one night covers it and two nights lets you add wineries or a goldfields town.

Get around
The centre is walkable: the station, Pall Mall, Rosalind Park, the gallery and the mine are all within about 15 minutes on foot. Local buses cover the suburbs but run roughly every 30–60 min and thin out in the evening and at weekends. A hop-on hop-off heritage tram runs along the main street past the mine. Parking in the centre is metered at about A$1 per hour with 1–2 hour limits, free on Saturdays with time limits still applying.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Summer days can pass 36 °C with nights above 20 °C: do the mine and gallery in the middle of the day and walk early or late.
- Bendigo is drier than Melbourne, but the region is bushfire country: check Fire Danger Ratings and local advice before any drive out of town in summer.
- Metred parking in the centre has 1–2 hour limits; overstay and you will be fined.
- Trains to Melbourne fill on weekday commuter runs, early morning and late afternoon: book a seat.
Bendigo is a low-crime regional city and the centre is fine on foot by day and early evening. The real risks are summer heat, bushfire days in the surrounding country and drink spiking or unposted bar tabs late on Hargreaves Mall and Pall Mall: watch your drink and ask the total before you order.
