Bend sits on the dry side of the Cascades at about 1,100 m, so it gets 300-plus days of sun and real seasons: ski and snowshoe in winter, float the Deschutes and hike the lakes in summer. Downtown is walkable and bike-friendly; everything outside it needs a car. Most visitors use Bend as a base for Central Oregon rather than a checklist of city sights.

Downtown on foot or by bike — Bend has an extensive path and lane network. Cascade East Transit runs limited local routes from Hawthorne Station (334 NE Hawthorne). For Smith Rock, Newberry, the Cascade Lakes or Mt Bachelor you need a car; rideshare is thin outside the centre.
