Bemboka
Stop for 1–2 hours on the Snowy Mountains Highway for the butter factory and a pie, or sleep one night as a base for Wadbilliga and South East Forests.
Bemboka is a village of about 577 people on the Snowy Mountains Highway (B72) between Bega and Cooma, in the upper Sapphire Coast hinterland. There is one preserved butter factory, one pie shop and two national parks within reach. Most travellers pass through in an hour; a night only pays off if you want quiet and an early start into the parks.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Fuel: fill up in Bega or Cooma — there is no reliable 24-hour service station in the village.
- Mobile coverage is patchy on the highway west of town and inside the national parks.
- Sharp bends on the B72 immediately west of Bemboka; wildlife (kangaroos, wombats) on the road at dawn and dusk.
- Park tracks are unsealed and may be closed after heavy rain: check with NSW National Parks before you set out.
A quiet highway village and generally safe; the real risks are wildlife on the road at dawn and dusk, unsealed park tracks after rain, and bushfire conditions in summer — check the Rural Fire Service app before driving west.
