Bell and Mount Wilson
Go for one day in autumn or spring with a car: Mount Wilson's gardens are the point, Bell is a 20-minute station stop. No car, skip it.
Bell and Mount Wilson are two tiny Upper Blue Mountains villages 14 km apart, both on the western edge of the range about 2 h 15 min by road from Sydney. Bell is a road junction and a request-stop railway station with almost nothing else; Mount Wilson holds half a dozen private gardens that open mainly in autumn and spring. There is no public transport between them, so a car is the whole trip. One day covers both; two nights only makes sense if you want a slow garden-and-fireplace weekend.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- No public transport links Bell station to Mount Wilson: the train does not solve the last 8 km.
- Bell station is a request stop: tell the guard you want to get off, or you will be carried on.
- The road into Bell station is unsealed and rough in places.
- Mobile speed cameras patrol Bells Line of Road: 100 km/h limit, 80 km/h in rain.
- Most Mount Wilson gardens are private and open only in set seasons or on set days: check each garden's own site before you drive.
- Phone coverage is 4G but patchy, even on Telstra.
Very low crime; the real risks are the drive (narrow unsealed access, wildlife at dusk, speed cameras) and cold, changeable mountain weather. Tell someone your route: phone coverage is patchy.
