Beli
Half a day is enough to walk the old village and swim; stay one night if you want to hike or kayak. Skip if you only have time for one spot on Cres.
Beli is a tiny stone village perched 130 m above the northeast coast of Cres island, built on a prehistoric hill-fort. Its narrow streets, a small pebble beach, a zipline and several hiking routes make it a quiet stop for a few hours or a relaxed overnight. All four restaurants are cash only.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and eye contact; 'dobar dan' in shops; avoid: Walking into a small shop without a greeting
- Café culture: Sit as long as you like over one coffee; avoid: Expecting the bill without asking
- Churches: Covered shoulders, quiet voices; avoid: Beachwear, flash photos during mass
- Conversation: Ask about food, sport, the islands; avoid: Comparing Croatia to Serbia or calling it 'Eastern Europe'
- Toasting: 'Živjeli' with eye contact; avoid: Looking away when glasses clink
Scams and watch-outs
- All four restaurants are cash only – bring enough euros.
- The access road from the main Cres road is narrow with serpentines; allow extra time.
- Water shoes recommended for the pebble beach and rocky entry.
- Camping Brajdi is basic and the toilets are not always clean.
Very safe. The main risks are the steep, narrow access road and the rocky beach – water shoes help. Watch your step on the stone streets.
