Best tours in Belfast: walking, food and day tours

Belfast splits into two tour products. In the city, you walk: the centre for Victorian architecture and the City Hall, the Titanic Quarter for the shipyard and the museum, and the west for the murals and the peace walls. Out of the city, you ride: the Antrim coast and the Giant's Causeway, about 100 km north, is the standard day tour and the one most visitors book.

If you have one full day, take a morning walking tour and a Causeway tour the next day. If you have only a half day, choose the walking tour that matches your interest and leave the coast for a longer trip. Book day tours online a few days ahead in summer; walking tours usually take walk-ups but a booked slot saves queueing.

Walking tours run through the day, most often late morning and early afternoon, and last around two hours. Day tours to the coast leave early, usually between 08:00 and 09:30, and return in the evening; a Causeway tour is a full day out, so do not plan anything else for that date.

Expect to pay separately for admission where a tour enters a paid site. Titanic Belfast charges its own ticket, and some coast tours include Causeway visitor facilities while others do not. Confirm what is included before you pay, and keep small change for a guide tip.

Belfast has two airports. George Best Belfast City Airport is closest to the centre, a short bus or taxi ride; Belfast International is further out and needs a bus or taxi. Trains and coaches from Dublin and other Irish cities arrive at Lanyon Place and the Europa Buscentre, both a walk from the main hotels.

Most walking tours meet at Belfast City Hall or in the Cathedral Quarter, both central and easy to reach on foot. Day tours usually pick up from a central point or from selected hotels; check the pickup list when you book, and arrive ten minutes early.

Decide what you want from a tour before you book. A general city walk is good orientation on day one; a themed tour, whether food, politics or the Titanic story, is better once you know the city. Two tours in one day is usually too much, especially with a full-day coast trip the next morning.

Guides are freelancers and reviews vary, so read recent reviews for the specific operator rather than the category. Ask about group size: a 25-person walk feels very different from a 10-person one. For the Causeway, check whether the tour stops at Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge and the Dark Hedges, since itineraries differ.

Tipping is optional and not expected, but a few pounds is a normal thank-you. If you are travelling alone, a small-group walking tour is an easy way to spend a morning with company.
