Belfair
Give Belfair one day, not a base: Theler Wetlands boardwalk in the morning, Belfair State Park at low tide, back to Bremerton or Gig Harbor by dark.
Belfair is a small Hood Canal town at the south end of the Kitsap Peninsula, about 3,900 people, built around two things: the Theler Wetlands estuary trails and a saltwater state park on the canal. There is no hotel strip and no nightlife, so most travellers pass through on SR-3 between Bremerton and Shelton, or sleep in Bremerton, Gig Harbor or Allyn and drive down for the wetlands. One full day covers it; two nights only makes sense if you want the state park campground or Tahuya State Forest trails.

Mason Transit runs Route 3 to Bremerton (including the ferry terminal) and Route 1 to Shelton, plus the local Belfair Loop (Route 4); buses are infrequent, so check the timetable before you rely on them.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Hood Canal shellfish beds close and open with biotoxin and pollution notices: check the state shellfish map before you dig.
- A Discover Pass is required at Belfair State Park and most state recreation land: $10/day or $45/year.
- Cell coverage is patchy on the Tahuya forest roads; download maps before you leave SR-3.
- Winter storms drop branches and cut power on the peninsula; carry water and a torch if you are driving in after dark.
Belfair is a quiet small town and violent crime is rare; the real risks are wet SR-3 driving, deer on the road at dusk, cold canal water, and shellfish you have not checked against the state closure map.
