Belen
Belen, New Mexico
Give Belen half a day, not a night: the Harvey House Museum and the railyard are the whole draw, and Albuquerque is 30 min north by train.
Belen is a Rio Grande railroad town of about 6,900 people, 30 miles south of Albuquerque, founded in 1740 and once the hub of Santa Fe Railway operations in New Mexico. The walkable core along Reinken Avenue holds the Harvey House Museum, the railyard and a handful of historic buildings. Most travellers see it as a half-day stop or a cheap bed south of Albuquerque, not a base.

Get around
A car is the honest answer: public transport inside Belen is largely absent. The walkable pocket is downtown along Reinken Avenue between Main Street and the railyard, which covers the museum and most historic structures and is within walking distance of the Rail Runner station. Main Street runs north-south and links both I-25 exits.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Regional lodging sells out around the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta in early October: book well ahead or stay in Albuquerque.
- Rail Runner service is limited daily, not turn-up-and-go: check the timetable before you plan a train day.
- Summer afternoons are hot and exposed; the museum porch is shaded, the walk between sights is not.
- Distances between Belen and the Manzano Mountains or the wildlife areas are car distances, not walkable ones.
Belen is a small town and the tourist core is quiet by day. The real risks are heat and exposure in summer, long unlit stretches between sights at night, and driving I-25 after dark; keep valuables out of sight in parked cars.
