Belém
Give Belém 2 nights: one full day for Ver-o-Peso, the old docks and Cidade Velha, one for Museu Goeldi and the riverside. Skip it if you only have a week in Brazil.
Belém is the capital of Pará and the gateway to the Amazon estuary, 100 km upriver from the Atlantic on Guajará Bay. Founded in 1616, it grew rich on the rubber boom and left behind iron markets, Belle Époque theatres and a colonial core. It is a food city first: açaí, tacacá, pato no tucupi and manioc come from here. Two nights covers the centre; add nights for Marajó or river boats.

Belém is fine by day in the centre and at Estação das Docas; after dark stay on lit main streets, avoid displaying jewellery or cameras, and use taxis rather than walking the back streets off Presidente Vargas.
