Give Beja one night, two if you want the Roman villa and a castle tower climb: it is a stop on the Lisbon–Faro line, not a base.
Beja is the inland capital of the lower Alentejo, a hill town of about 36,000 people with a 13th-century castle keep you can climb, a convent museum and Portugal's deepest Roman-remains collection outside Évora. It sits on the Lisbon–Faro rail line and the IP2, so it works as a one-night break between Lisbon and the Algarve or as a slow-food stop in the wheat and olive plains. Sights are compact and walkable in half a day; the countryside, the Roman villa of Pisões and the wineries need a car.

Get around
The centre is small and hilly: castle, museum, archaeological centre and main squares are all within about 15 minutes on foot. Local buses cover the outskirts but are thin; a car is the practical way to reach Pisões, the wineries and the villages. Trains and long-distance buses run from the station downhill from the centre.
