Beauty Point
Give Beauty Point one night as a Tamar Valley stop: seahorse and platypus centre plus a winery lunch, then drive on to Stanley or Launceston.
Beauty Point is a small Tamar River town of about 1,200 people, 40 minutes north of Launceston on the West Tamar Highway (A7). It is a half-day stop built around two wildlife attractions and the Tamar Valley wine road, not a base for a long stay. Most travellers sleep one night here or visit as a day trip from Launceston.

Get around
A car is effectively required: attractions, wineries and beaches are spread along the A7 and there is no town bus service. Distances are short (Beauty Point to Beaconsfield about 10 min, to Greens Beach about 15 min), so fuel up in Beaconsfield or Exeter before a late return.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Almost nothing is open after dark: eat before 8pm or self-cater.
- Wildlife centre entry is by timed session, not walk-up all day: book the seahorse or platypus tour slot ahead in summer.
- Kangaroos and wallabies cross the A7 at dusk and dawn; slow down on the Beaconsfield and Greens Beach stretches.
- Mobile coverage is patchy on the rural C741 and Narawntapu roads; download offline maps.
A quiet, low-crime rural town; the real risks are wildlife on the A7 at dusk, cold water and fast Tamar currents, and long gaps between open shops and fuel.
