Beamish
Go for one full day at the open-air museum; sleep in Durham or Newcastle unless you want the Beamish Hall or glamping night.
Beamish is a village in County Durham whose only real draw is Beamish Open Air Museum, a 300-acre recreation of north-east England life from the 1820s to the 1950s. The museum has its own tram and bus network, so a visit is a full day on foot. Most travellers come as a day trip from Durham or Newcastle; a small number stay one night to split the site or to use Beamish Hall as a country base.

Scams and watch-outs
- Museum opening days and hours change by season: check the official site before you travel.
- The site is exposed and hilly; bring a waterproof and comfortable shoes.
- Bus X31 stops at East Street in Stanley, over a mile from the museum entrance: check which service reaches the gates.
- Rural lanes around Beamish have no pavement in places; walk facing traffic.
Beamish and Stanley are ordinary, low-crime places; the real risks are rural lanes without pavements, uneven museum paths and cold, wet weather on an exposed site.
