Bayreuth is a small Upper Franconian city that runs on two engines: the UNESCO-listed Margravial Opera House and the Richard Wagner Festival, which fills every bed for 30 days each summer. Outside late July and August it is quiet, walkable and cheap, with baroque palaces, a hillside Festspielhaus and Franconian beer gardens. Most travellers need one full day plus a night; two nights if they add the Eremitage gardens and a brewery.

Get around
The centre is flat and compact: most sights sit within a 15-minute walk of Maximilianstraße. Buses run about every 20 minutes from the ZOH hub one block north of the Rathaus; day passes exist under the VGN tariff. Bikes are the fastest option and are allowed in most pedestrian zones, with pedestrians having priority. Taxis are scarce and pricey: call +49 921 22 333 rather than hail one.

- Rail works on the Nuremberg line: southbound trains may end at Neuhaus (Pegnitz) with an hourly replacement bus, so allow extra time (check current status).
- The A 9 exit Bayreuth-Nord drops you into an industrial one-way maze; follow signs to Stadtmitte or Rotmain Center.
- Supermarket and store car parks are monitored by third-party firms and fines are enforced.
