Bayard
Bayard, Nebraska
Stay one night, or just drive in for Chimney Rock: the museum is 15 min south, the town has no hotel, and two hours covers Main Street.
Bayard is a town of about 1,200 people on US-26 in the Nebraska Panhandle, 37 km east of Scottsbluff and the closest settlement to Chimney Rock, the Oregon Trail landmark. There is no motel or hotel in town, so most travellers sleep in Scottsbluff or Gering and use Bayard for the rock, the depot museum and a meal on Main Street. Plan half a day here, or one night if you are camping.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Rattlesnakes are present around Chimney Rock and the campground: stay on marked trails and check ground before sitting.
- No motel or hotel in Bayard — book in Scottsbluff or Gering, or bring an RV or tent.
- Distances are long and services thin: fill the tank in Scottsbluff or Bridgeport before heading out.
- Summer storms and winter ice on US-26; check Nebraska road conditions before a winter drive.
- Some Main Street businesses keep short or seasonal hours — call ahead or check before relying on one.
Bayard is a quiet small town and violent crime is rare. The real risks are the drive (long empty stretches, winter ice, deer at dusk), summer heat and rattlesnakes around Chimney Rock — carry water and stay on trails.
