Bayanhot
Half a day: see two Tibetan Buddhist temples and eat Mongolian food. Not a base for the region.
Bayanhot is the administrative centre of Alxa Left Banner in Western Inner Mongolia, with a population of about 95,000 and a 30% ethnic Mongol share. Its two restored 18th-century Tibetan Buddhist temples and a mix of Mongolian, Han and Hui restaurants make it a compact stop for travellers crossing the Alxa Desert or heading to the Helan Mountains. Most visitors spend 3–5 hours here.
