Bautzen is a walled medieval town on a Spree embankment in Saxony, and the cultural centre of the Sorbs, Germany's smallest recognised minority. Towers, a bilingual old town and two very different museums sit within a 15-minute walk of each other. Most travellers see it as a stop between Dresden and Görlitz, but one night is what makes the evening and the Easter or summer events possible.

Get around
Walk. The old town is compact and the sights sit inside or just outside the wall. Local buses cover the station and Kleinwelka; a car is only useful for the Saurierpark and the surrounding villages, and then park outside the wall.
