Batu is a hill town at 800–1,100 m on the slopes of Mount Welirang and Mount Arjuna, 45 minutes by road from Malang. It grew as a Dutch-era hill station and now runs on family attractions — Museum Angkut, Jawa Timur Park, Batu Secret Zoo — plus apple orchards and orchid nurseries in the surrounding villages. Two nights covers the main sights at a relaxed pace; three if you add a trek or a Pujon evening. Weekdays are cheaper and quieter than weekends.

Get around
The centre is walkable, but the attractions are spread over several kilometres, so most visitors use Gojek or Grab cars, hotel shuttles or a hired driver. Local bemo minibuses still run between the town and nearby villages. Ride-hailing is the simplest option for short hops; agree a day rate with a driver if you plan to string together Museum Angkut, Selecta and Pujon in one day.

- Mount Welirang is an active volcano; trek only with a local guide and check current status before setting out.
- Upland nights drop to 3–4 °C on the peaks and can be cold in town too — bring a layer.
- Bring cash for village orchards, market stalls and small warungs; card acceptance is patchy outside hotels.
Batu is a calm hill town and the main risks are practical: mountain-road driving, cold nights, weekend traffic and volcano trekking without a guide. Petty theft is uncommon but keep bags zipped in crowded parks and markets.
