Battle
Give Battle one full day and one night: the abbey and battlefield take 2–3 h, the town 1 h, and trains back to London run twice an hour.
Battle is a small East Sussex town built around the site of the 1066 Battle of Hastings, where William of Normandy defeated King Harold. English Heritage runs the abbey and battlefield at the south end of the High Street; the rest of the town is a short, walkable High Street with a museum, a church and a few pubs with rooms. Most visitors come for a half-day from Hastings or a day trip from London, but a single night here is the calmest way to see the site without a rush.

The town is small enough to walk end to end in about 15 minutes. The railway station is half a mile southeast of the centre and close to the battlefield. Bus 304/305 runs hourly from Hastings via St Leonards to Battle station and the abbey, then on to Robertsbridge and Hawkhurst. A car helps for the surrounding villages and castles.

Sleep
- High Street
- Inns and the Abbey Hotel sit on the street between the station and the abbey; everything is a walk away.
- Station side (southeast)
- Closest to the railway station and the battlefield entrance; quiet at night.
- Powdermill Lane and the edges
- Country-house hotel and campsite outside the centre; you need a car or a taxi.
Language
English everywhere, with strong regional accents and vocabulary; Welsh and Gaelic appear on signs and in some communities but you will never need them. Visitors mostly trip over words, not accents.
- Useful words: 'loo' toilet, 'queue' line, 'lift' elevator, 'pavement' sidewalk, 'return' round-trip ticket, 'cheers' thanks.
- 'First floor' is one above the ground floor.
- Politeness is indirect: 'I'm not sure that's quite right' can mean 'that's wrong'.
Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- The abbey and battlefield close earlier in winter (Oct–Mar) than in summer; check the English Heritage site before you travel.
- The site is closed 24–26 Dec and 1 Jan.
- Trains from London Charing Cross run about twice an hour and take roughly 90 min; the last evening service back is early by big-city standards, so check times before a late dinner.
- Some rural bus routes are infrequent and stop early; do not rely on them for an evening return.
Battle is a small, quiet town and most visits pass without incident. The real risks are uneven ground in the abbey ruins, fast traffic on the A21/A2100 and unlit country lanes if you walk back from a pub outside the centre; keep to lit routes after dark and take a taxi if unsure.
