Battersea
Battersea, Ontario
Skip as a base unless you fish or boat: it is a 20 km rural hamlet north of Kingston with no town centre to walk. Stay 1 night, or day-trip from Kingston.
Battersea is a small community in South Frontenac, about 20 km north of Kingston, sitting between Loughborough Lake, Dog Lake and the Rideau Canal. There is no main street to browse: the draw is water access, the marina, and the lock stations and trails of the Rideau corridor. Almost everything here needs a car, so it works as a one-night lake stop or a half-day loop out of Kingston, not as a multi-day destination.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- No walkable village centre: plan every meal and errand by car.
- Cell coverage is patchy on the back roads and around the lakes.
- Rural roads are unlit and shared with deer at dusk; avoid driving after dark if you can.
- Seasonal businesses close outside summer: confirm your lodging and marina are open before booking.
- Ticks are present in long grass and woods in spring and summer; check yourself after hikes.
Very low crime; the real risks are rural driving (deer, unlit roads, winter ice), patchy phone signal and cold water on the lakes. Tell someone your route before paddling.
