Baton Rouge
Give Baton Rouge 1–2 nights: a half-day for the State Capitol and downtown riverfront, a half-day for LSU. Skip it as a base — New Orleans is 80 mi away.
Baton Rouge is Louisiana's capital and second-largest city, on the east bank of the Mississippi, 80 mi (129 km) northwest of New Orleans by I-10 — about 90 min outside weekday rush hours. It is a government and university town, not a tourist town: the sights are a compact downtown strip plus the LSU campus, and most travellers see it in a day or use it as a stop between New Orleans and Houston or Lafayette. Summer is the trap — sustained 90s °F with high humidity and July ozone days.

Get around
CATS runs city buses with a downtown transit centre at 2250 Florida Blvd, but coverage is thin and waits are long; a car is the practical choice for LSU, the malls and day trips. Downtown itself is walkable between the capitols, the riverfront and the USS Kidd. Rideshare fills the gaps after dark.
See and do
Known for
- Louisiana State Capitol (Art Deco tower)
- LSU and Tiger Stadium
- USS Kidd destroyer
- Old State Capitol museum

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Summer heat and humidity are the main hazard: plan outdoor sightseeing before 11:00 and carry water.
- July brings ozone days that affect people with breathing conditions.
- Hurricane season runs 1 June–30 November; check forecasts before a Gulf-coast drive.
- Downtown is quiet at night outside event weekends; use rideshare rather than walking long blocks.
- I-10 through Baton Rouge is a known bottleneck at weekday rush hours — time drives to New Orleans around it.
Baton Rouge has a higher violent-crime rate than most US cities, concentrated in specific neighbourhoods rather than the tourist core. Downtown, the Capitol grounds and the LSU campus are fine by day; after dark stay in lit, busy areas and use rideshare instead of walking long blocks.
