Portland is the default day trip: a walkable Old Port, the Portland Museum of Art, the waterfront and the best food between Boston and Halifax. Drive in, park once near the Old Port, and walk. The Amtrak Downeaster stops in Bath and Brunswick and runs to Portland in about 45 minutes, which makes this the one trip you can do without a car — check the timetable, because service is limited and not every train stops in Bath.
Freeport is a shopping trip, not a sightseeing one. L.L.Bean's flagship store is open around the clock, and the outlet streets sit within a few blocks. It pairs well with Brunswick, 15 minutes further north, where Bowdoin College and a compact downtown make a pleasant hour.
Popham Beach State Park is the closest ocean beach and one of the better ones in Maine: a long sand spit, the Kennebec and Morse rivers, and the ruins of Fort Popham at the western end. Parking fills on hot summer weekends, so arrive before mid-morning. Swimming is cold even in August and lifeguard cover is limited.
