Before you start
Welcome to the Independence Square and The Circus audio walk in Basseterre. 3 stops: St George's Anglican Church, Independence Square and Berkeley Memorial Clock. Morning cluster: Independence Square, the Co-Cathedral and St George's church, then lunch on The Circus before the ships crowd it.
Independence Square to The Circus and Fort Street, the historic core only. Underfoot: paved streets, uneven pavements; slope: flat; shade: low.
Basseterre is a small port town that carries more history than its size suggests: a fought-over French and English colonial capital, then the counting house for one of the Caribbean's biggest sugar economies, now the seat of the smallest sovereign state in the Americas.
Before you start: Cover up when entering churches; no photos during services. Keep your eyes on the street, and pause the audio before you cross a road.

Look for
- Overview
Stop 3 of 3: Berkeley Memorial Clock. Arrival point: The Circus, where Fort Street, Bank Street, Liverpool Row and Bay Road meet.
The cast-iron clock tower in the middle of The Circus, Basseterre's best-known landmark: five minutes to see it and get your bearings, longer if you sit at a café on the roundabout.
Look for Overview: Nothing to go inside; it is a free-standing cast-iron tower.
The Circus, the small roundabout a short walk from the square, was deliberately modelled on London's Piccadilly Circus, complete with the cast-iron Berkeley Memorial Clock at its centre.
It sits on a traffic roundabout: cross at the marked points, not against traffic. Traffic and cruise-day foot traffic build from mid-morning; quiet before 08:30. None. A cast-iron clock tower from the late 19th century, given to the town by the Berkeley family (exact donor and date on the plaque: check on site) — one of the most-photographed small landmarks in St Kitts, modelled loosely on London street clocks of the period.
End of the walk
