Give Basel 1–2 nights: museums and the Rhine on day one, a Dreiländereck or Jura day trip on day two. Skip it as a base for the Alps.
Basel sits in the Dreiländereck where Switzerland, France and Germany meet, on a bend of the Rhine that splits the city into Grossbasel (old town, cathedral, most museums) and Kleinbasel (nightlife, Messe). It is a museum city first — the Kunstmuseum, Fondation Beyeler and the Tinguely museum are the reason to come — with a compact medieval centre you can walk in half a day. Trains reach Zurich and Bern in under an hour, Paris in three, so it works as a first or last stop on a Swiss trip rather than a standalone destination.

Get around
Walk the old town; take the green BVB trams and buses for everything else. Buy tickets at the stop machine before boarding — there is no vending on board — and validate; inspectors fine you on the spot if you have none. Most hotels and the youth hostel issue a free Mobility Pass at check-in covering trams, buses and the airport bus for your stay. Four small Fähri ferries cross the Rhine, drawn by the current.

Basel is a low-risk city; the real hazards are trams at crossings, the fast Rhine current, and pickpockets around Barfüsserplatz and the station at night. Standard big-city care is enough.
