Barueri
Skip as a sightseeing base: Barueri is a business suburb of São Paulo. Go only for an Alphaville hotel or a Tamboré park half-day.
Barueri sits 25–30 km west of central São Paulo and splits in two along the Tietê river: the old low-rise centre on the southwest bank, and Alphaville on the northeast bank, a gated, high-rise business district built after 1973. There is almost no tourist sightseeing here; people come for corporate offices, shopping malls and hotels that undercut central São Paulo on price. Treat it as a place to sleep and work, not a destination.

Get around
Alphaville and the Barueri centre are each compact enough to walk, but the two are on opposite banks of the Tietê and poorly linked by transit. A car or ride-hailing app is the practical way to move between them; local buses exist but are slow and infrequent. CPTM Line 8-Diamond serves the Barueri centre, not Alphaville.

- Alphaville
- Business hotels, malls and restaurants within walking distance of each other; safest and easiest area for a visitor with a car or a taxi budget.
- Barueri centre (left bank)
- Cheaper, low-rise and residential; CPTM Line 8 station, main shopping street, but few hotels and less to do in the evening.
- Tamboré
- Quieter, greener, near Parque Ilha do Tamboré and Shopping Tamboré; needs a car for everything.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake, hug or cheek kiss (one in São Paulo, two in Rio); avoid: Being stiff with new acquaintances
- Gestures: Use thumbs-up freely; avoid: The OK hand sign (it is rude)
- Language: Try Portuguese; say obrigado/obrigada; avoid: Defaulting to Spanish
- Time: Expect relaxed social punctuality; avoid: Being late for tours and flights
- Beach: Bring only a towel, cash and a copy of your ID; avoid: Leaving things unattended
Scams and watch-outs
- Barueri is one of Brazil's most unequal municipalities: upscale Alphaville sits close to poorer neighbourhoods. Don't walk between them at night.
- Alphaville's gated communities and many office towers are private: security will stop you without an appointment.
- Traffic on the Castelo Branco and the marginal roads is heavy at rush hour; add 30–60 min to any cross-town plan.
- Toll is charged on the Castelo Branco highway (BR-374).
- Malls and offices are card- and Pix-friendly; small shops in the old centre may prefer cash.
Alphaville is calm and heavily guarded; the old centre is ordinary Brazilian-suburb level. Use ride-hailing after dark, don't walk between the two banks, and keep phones out of sight on the street.

Most embassies and consulates are in São Paulo city; check your country's consulate there before travelling.
Alphaville is a business district: hotels fill on weekdays, so weekend rates are often lower.
