Barrydale
Stop for lunch and a walk through the heritage garden, or stay one night if you want to visit Sanbona Wildlife Reserve. Not a base.
Barrydale is a small fruit-growing town on Route 62 at the foot of the Langeberg Mountains, founded in 1880. It works as a lunch stop between Montagu and Oudtshoorn, or as a one-night stay if you plan to visit Sanbona Wildlife Reserve or the Warmwaterberg Spa. The main street has a few restaurants and a wine cellar; the heritage garden shows Karoo succulents.

- Elders: Use Mr/Mrs or 'Mama', 'Baba' respectfully in townships and rural areas; avoid: First names with older people you have just met

- Politics and race: Ask questions and listen; avoid: Lecturing on history or crime
Scams and watch-outs
- Route 62 is a scenic drive but has narrow sections and sharp bends; take it slow.
- Sanbona entry requires a booking; day visitors are limited.
- Fuel stations close early; fill up in Montagu or Oudtshoorn before crossing.
Barrydale is a small, quiet town. The main risks are heat in summer and driving the narrow R62 at night. Car guards may ask for a tip; R5–10 is fine.
