Barrackpore is India's oldest cantonment, on the Hooghly about 25 km north of Kolkata, and the place where the 1857 rebellion began. Its sights sit in a green riverside strip — a former governor-general's house, a Gandhi museum, a hanging spot and old churches — and the town is best known to locals for biryani restaurants. Most travellers see it as a half-day or day trip from Kolkata rather than a place to stay.

Get around
The town spreads along the river and the Barrackpore Trunk Road, so walking covers the cantonment core but not the whole town. Cycle rickshaws and autos handle short hops; app cabs work but can be slow to arrive. The suburban train from Kolkata's Sealdah station is the usual way in — check current timetables, as last departures change. Ferries cross the Hooghly from the ghats; confirm landings and times on the day.
