Barra Velha
Half a day to one night: walk the beachfront, see the Cristo statue and eat fresh fish. Not a multi-day base unless you want quiet beaches and a lake.
Barra Velha is a small coastal town in Santa Catarina, between Joinville and Balneário Camboriú on BR-101. Its nine beaches, a freshwater lake separated by an old sand bar, and a fishing-village feel make it a stop for a few hours or a single night. The population swells from 30,000 to 100,000 on summer weekends, so plan accordingly.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake, hug or cheek kiss (one in São Paulo, two in Rio); avoid: Being stiff with new acquaintances
- Gestures: Use thumbs-up freely; avoid: The OK hand sign (it is rude)
- Language: Try Portuguese; say obrigado/obrigada; avoid: Defaulting to Spanish
- Time: Expect relaxed social punctuality; avoid: Being late for tours and flights
- Beach: Bring only a towel, cash and a copy of your ID; avoid: Leaving things unattended
Scams and watch-outs
- Summer weekends (Dec–Feb) triple the population: book accommodation weeks ahead.
- BR-101 is the only main road; traffic jams are common on Friday and Sunday evenings.
- The Cristo statue is a replica; the hill offers views but the climb is steep.
- Check if the Festa Nacional de Pirão is on (early September) if you want a lively visit.
Barra Velha is generally safe for a small beach town. The main risks are traffic on BR-101 and petty theft on crowded summer beaches. Lock your car and keep valuables out of sight.
