Barnstable
Half a day to a full day: see the historic village and a beach, then move on. Use Hyannis as your base for ferries to Nantucket or Martha's Vineyard.
Barnstable is the historic heart of Cape Cod, settled in 1639, with seven distinct villages. Most travellers use Hyannis for its transport hub and shopping, then visit the quieter north-side villages for the working harbour, old houses and small beaches. One day covers the essentials; two if you add a ferry trip.
