Barnaul is the capital of Altai Krai, a 600,000-person city on the Ob river founded in the 18th century as a silver and copper mining centre. It is not a sightseeing city: the draw is a handful of museums, a neo-Byzantine cathedral and the gateway role it plays for the Altai mountains and the Chuysky Highway. Most travellers pass through on the way to Biysk and the Altai Republic, or stop for a night on the Trans-Siberian spur from Novosibirsk.

Get around
Buses (about 150 routes), marshrutkas, trams and trolleybuses cover the city; taxis are cheap and the usual choice for cross-town trips. The centre along Lenina Prospekt is walkable. Pavlovsky Highway leads to Novosibirsk, Zmeinogorsky Highway toward Kazakhstan, Pravoberezhny Highway to Novosibirsk and Biysk.
