Bargarh
Give Bargarh half a day for Patra Dam and the town market, or skip it unless you are already crossing Northwest Odisha.
Bargarh is the district headquarters of a rice-and-handloom corner of western Odisha, on the road and rail corridor between Sambalpur and Raipur. Sights are thin: Patra Dam on the Mahanadi, the town bazaar, and the Bargarh-Barpali handloom villages nearby. Most travellers pass through in half a day or use it as a night stop between Bhubaneswar and Raipur.

Scams and watch-outs
- Summer heat peaks above 40°C in May: carry water and start early.
- Night buses can run hours late; confirm the departure locally before you commit.
- No ATM or card acceptance in the handloom villages: bring cash.
Bargarh is calm by Indian standards. The real risks are heatstroke in April–June, unlit roads at night and long-distance night buses with unreliable departure times.
