Bardolino
Half a day to one night: walk the lakefront, taste Bardolino wine and see the Eremo di San Giorgio. Skip if you only have time for one Lake Garda town — choose Sirmione or Malcesine instead.
Bardolino is a relaxed lakeside town on the eastern shore of Lake Garda, known for its namesake red wine, a 15th-century monastery and a promenade that runs past olive trees and small beaches. Most visitors come for a half-day stop between Verona and the northern lake, or as a quiet base for a night or two. The centre is compact and walkable; the main sights — the Eremo di San Giorgio, the Zeni Wine Museum and the lakefront — can be seen in three to four hours.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Say buongiorno (until mid-afternoon) or buonasera on entering shops and bars; avoid: Walking in and pointing without a greeting
- Cheek kisses: Two kisses, right cheek first, among friends; follow their lead; avoid: Kissing strangers or in business settings
- Dress: Smart-casual in cities; covered shoulders and knees in churches; avoid: Beachwear, bare chests and flip-flops away from the beach
- Queues: At delis and pharmacies take a number (numerino); avoid: Assuming the crowd at a bar counter is chaos — pay at the till first where asked
- Restaurants: Wait to be seated and ask for the bill; avoid: Splitting a bill item by item with a large group
- Conversation: Food, football and family are safe openers; avoid: Mafia jokes and north–south stereotypes
- Dinner at a home: Bring pastries, wine or flowers (not chrysanthemums, which are for funerals); avoid: Refusing seconds too firmly
Scams and watch-outs
- ZTL (limited traffic zone) in the historic centre: check signs before driving in.
- Parking fills by late morning in summer; use the paid lots at the edge of town.
- Eremo di San Giorgio opening hours are irregular: check the official site or call ahead.
- Lake Garda can get strong afternoon winds (the Ora) — secure beach items.
Bardolino is very safe. The main risks are summer heat, crowded pavements and pickpocketing in peak season. Watch for bicycles on the promenade.
