Give Baotou one day for the museum and Wudangzhao, or skip it: the grasslands and dunes people come for sit 50–100 km outside the city.
Baotou is Inner Mongolia's largest city and its steel and rare-earth capital, a low-rise industrial sprawl on the Yellow River with the Yinshan Mountains behind it. Almost nothing worth crossing China for is in the city itself: the draw is Wudangzhao lamasery 50 km northeast, the Guyang and Shiguai Great Wall sections, and grassland and desert country reached by car. Treat it as a one-night base with a hired car, not a sightseeing city.

Get around
The city is long and split by Gangtie Street, so plan on taxis or buses rather than walking between districts. Bus 43 reaches the Rare Earths Museum; buses 1, 22, 42, 43, 52 and C2 stop at the Baotou Museum. For Wudangzhao and the grasslands you need a car, a tour, or the early minibuses by the east railway station.

Scams and watch-outs
- Distances are real: Wudangzhao is 50 km out, the dunes about 50 km south, the Guyang Great Wall further. Nothing outside the city is a walk.
- Spring brings dust and occasional sandstorms; carry a mask and water.
- Winter lows sit near −16 °C with wind chill well below that.
- Grassland and desert trips sold in town vary widely in what is included: confirm transport, meals and horse rides in writing before paying.
Baotou is a low-crime city and walking the main districts at night is unremarkable. The real risks are winter cold, spring dust, long unlit drives to the grasslands and desert, and tours that leave the return leg vague: fix the pickup time and vehicle before you pay.
