Bangor is one of the UK's smallest cities, a university town of about 16,000 on the Menai Strait between Snowdonia and Anglesey. The Victorian pier, a 6th-century cathedral and a compact High Street fill an afternoon; the real value is the rail and road junction for the mountains, the castles and the Dublin ferry at Holyhead. Most travellers sleep one night or stop for a few hours.
